International H.I.F. Biber Competition

This is a competition about contemporary performance of early music. Our purpose is to encourage the development of young musicians in original performance of period music through the study of the spirit of Austrian baroque music.

This is a competition of Encounter and Communication. Interested listeners are invited to audit the competiton free of charge, with the exception of the Winners’ concert.

PRIZES:
F.J. Aumann Prize: 1.500 EUR -given for new discoveries in baroque music.
R. Weichlein Prize:1.500 EUR – given for the advancement of Austrian baroque music.
H.I.F. Biber Prize: 1.500 EUR and an invitation for a concert – for the following criteria:
A maximum of 10 points will be awarded according to the following criteria: artistic expression, innovative interpretation, tone, programme choice, Austrian componant, recently discovered literature, presentation, technical and musical skill.

Demo-CD: The winners have the possibility to make a recording before the Winners’ concert. The demo-CD will be placed at the winners’ disposal.

All 3 prizes could be won by one contestant.

SPECIAL PRIZES:
Westdeutscher Rundfunk: An ensemble (soloist) should get the chance to perform a concert for WDR 3. The concert will be recorded and broadcasted in "WDR 3 Concert".

Wiener Konzerthaus: There are regular invitations to the Festival Resonanzen in the Vienna Konzerthaus (Jury: Peter Reichelt).

Brucknerhaus Linz: Doris Schmidl from Brucknerhaus Linz will be present at the competition days.

Note 1 Music Gmbh: A representative of the record company will be present at the competition days. A participant of the competition receives a prize – the production of a CD recording 2018 (recording technique, edition, booklet, pressure), which will be published on the label Pan Classics.

PARTICIPATION RESTRICTIONS:
  • Every musician can take part of the competition (no age limit!);
    Singers and Ensembles are welcome; The formation of the ensemble can be changed during the performance;
    It's possible to take part in more than one formation;
  • A programme of 40 minutes in length, of which 20 minutes must be performed in form of a concert. The jury will choose one composition which should be completely played as a part of the program. Please find your piece on a list next to the entrance of the hall at 1:30 p.m. the 29th of April;
  • Accompaniment must be provided by the canditate(s);
  • After ca. 6 candidates there will be an open jury address;
  • Candidates may and are encouraged to attend all presentations;
  • Winners participate in a Concert (Sommerrefektorium, St.Florian Monastery) which will be recorded for radio;
  • The organ and harpsichord will be tuned in Young temperature, a=415hz;
  • A maximum of 10 points will be awarded according to the following criteria:
    Artistic expression, innovative interpretation, tone, programme choice, Austrian componant, recently discovered literature, presentation, technical and musical skill.
  • The artists have five minutes to adapt the stage. Then we expect a appearance like in concert.
  • REGISTRATION:

    • latest registration date: 1 March 2017;
    • Maximum candidates: 18;
    • Submissions; Written programme and a 5 minute digital (Mp3) recording;
    • Registration fee: €   100,00 (to be paid after application has been accepted);
