OPEN RECORDER DAYS AMSTERDAM 2017

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The competition will take place on 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th October 2017 at the Amsterdam Conservatoire, during the Open Recorder Days Amsterdam (ORDA-2017).

Categories A, B and C are open to amateur recorder players.

Category A: soloists of all ages.

Category B: consorts of amateur recorder players consisting of 2 to 5 players and including at least 1 recorder player.

Category C: amateur mixed ensembles consisting of 6 to 20 players and including at least 1 recorder player.

Students in the preliminary year ('vooropleiding') of a Dutch conservatoire are allowed to participate in all categories. Young talent receiving lessons at a junior conservatoire are allowed to participate in categories A, B and C.

Participants holding a professional music degree are not allowed to participate in these categories.

Category D is open to recorder consorts formed by conservatoire students pursuing a degree in recorder and/or professional recorder players under 30 years of age.

The organisation has the right to make small adjustments to these rules and regulations in agreement with the jury. The latest version of the rules & regulations is available online at www.openrecorderdays.com

CATEGORIES 1) Amateur categories: There are a total of nine amateur categories determined by age and setting:

By age:

1) 11 years or younger

2) 12 until 15 years old

3) 16 years or older

The age category of the participants will be determined by the (average) age on 26 October 2017.

For ensembles with a conductor, the age of the conductor does not need to be taken into consideration.

By setting:

A) Recorder solo or with accompaniment

B) Recorder duo, trio, quartet and quintet / mixed ensembles of 2 to 5 members

C) Recorder sextets and larger ensembles / mixed ensembles of 6 or more members – Soloists (category A) may perform solo, or with one accompanist. Two accompanists are allowed in category A only for the performance of basso continuo.

 Accompaniment on tape or CD is only allowed for contemporary compositions that require it specifically.

Ensembles in category C may perform with a (professional or amateur) conductor – All members of the ensembles in category B, C and D must perform in all compositions included in their programme.

In 2015 the competition introduced a special category: D) (Pre)professional recorder consorts of 2 or more members. – The ensembles in this category must be formed by conservatoire students or graduates; – The average age of the ensemble members should not be higher than 30 years on 26th October 2017;

The ensembles must be formed exclusively by recorder players. – Ensembles in category D will be judged according to a higher standard than the amateur categories. The jury will, for example, pay attention to the basic ensemble techniques (coordination, intonation), to the interpretation of the various musical styles and to the composition of the programme.

ACCOMPANISTS – The organisation encourages contestants to come with their own accompanists, preferably (but not necessarily) of a similar age group and level. However, there will be an ORDA pianist and a harpsichordist available for category A. If contestants request to perform with an ORDA accompanist they must pay an extra fee of € 15,- – Soloists performing with an ORDA accompanist must submit three printed copies of their sheet music to the address of Stichting The Royal Wind Music (see above) before the 15th of September, 2017. – Accompanists of soloists taking part in category A do not need to pay an application fee. – All members of (mixed) ensembles in categories B, C and D need to pay an application fee. – Accompaniment on recorder is not allowed.

PROGRAMME – Contestants in age category 1 (11 years or younger) must submit 1 programme of minimum 7 and maximum 10 minutes playing time, to be performed during the preliminary round and, if applicable, the semi-finals. – Contestants in age categories 2 (11-15 years) and 3 (16 years and older) must submit 2 programmes of minimum 7 and maximum 10 minutes playing time, one for the preliminary round and a different one for the semi-finals. Contestants in these categories are allowed to repeat max. 4 minutes of music in the programme for the semi-finals. – Contestants in category D – (pre) professional recorder ensembles, must submit 2 programmes of minimum 12 and maximum 15 minutes playing time each, one for the preliminary round and a different one for the semi-finals. Contestants in this category are not allowed to repeat any works in the program for the semi-finals.

Each programme must include at least one composition from the Renaissance (ca. 1475-1620). The following rules apply to all categories:

Each programme must include music from at least two of the following periods/styles: Medieval & Renaissance (before 1600), Early Baroque (1600-1675), Late Baroque (1675-1750), Classical/Romantic (1750-1900), Modern (1900-present). – It is allowed to present one or more single movements or sections of larger works like sonatas or suites. – Arrangements of music not originally written for recorders are allowed. – Own compositions and improvisations by the contestants are also allowed. – Contestants including music from the Renaissance (ca. 1475-1620) in their programs have the chance to win the extra “Royal Wind Music Prize” for the best performance of a piece of Renaissance music (see below under “prizes”). – Contestants performing contemporary music have the chance to win the extra “Contemporary Music Prize” sponsored by Donemus and the Gaudeamus Foundation. – No changes in the submitted programs are allowed after 15th September, 2017. ROUNDS The competition consists of three rounds. In each round, competitors will perform their programme of 7-10 minutes of music, or 12-15 in category D (see above).

All rounds of the competition are open to the public. 1) Preliminary round – A maximum of 80 soloists or ensembles may take part in the preliminary round.

This round takes part on Thursday 26th October and Friday 27th October 2017. – During the preliminary round the jury is divided into two groups of three jury members each. Contestants in category D will always perform for the complete jury. – Contestants can warm up for approximately 10 minutes before their performance in a warm-up space. It is not possible for any competitors to warm up in the hall itself. – The jury may ask contestants to stop playing if the program exceeds the scheduled time limit. 2) Semi-finals – There will be one public announcement of candidates reaching the semi-finals, in the early evening of Friday 27th October.

A maximum of 27 soloists or ensembles may take part in the semi-finals: 24 amateur soloists and ensembles and 3 (pre) professional consorts in category D. – During the semi-finals and finals, competitors will perform for the complete jury. – The semi-finals take place on Saturday 28th October 2017 from 9am. 3)

Finals – The jury will announce the finalists, as well as the piece(s) they should perform in the finals, on Saturday 28th October in the evening.. – The finals take place on Sunday 29th October. – Should the jury consider that the required standard has not been reached in a certain category or age group, they may choose not to include this category in the finals.

PRIZES – Prizes consist of stipends, instruments, sheet music, CDs, books and accessories. – The jury may award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in each of the ten categories to contestants reaching the semi-finals or the finals. NB: Contestants reaching only the semi-finals might still be ORDA prize winners! – The jury may award extra prizes (i.e. The “Royal Wind Music Prize”, the prize for the best amateur accompanist, the prize for the best performance of a contemporary work, etc.) to participants in any round (incl. preliminary!) – The jury will freely divide the available prizes (stipends, instruments, sheet music, CDs, books and accessories) amongst the finalists.

An ORDA-2017 stipend is a money prize to be invested in instruments, a course or master-class, or any other significant asset for the musical education and development of the winning soloists/ensembles. Contestants will inform The Royal Wind Music about the use they make of the awarded stipend. – The jury may award The Royal Wind Music Prize for the best performance of work of the period ca. 1475-1620 in any setting. – The jury may award a prize for the “best performer of contemporary music” – The jury may award a special prize for an outstanding contestant (soloist or ensemble) older than 27 years of age. – The jury may award the Best Non-Recorder Player Prize to the best amateur player on any instrument other than recorder, to musicians taking part on any of the three rounds. Amateur players are by definition not holding a degree in music or pursuing one (even on an instrument different than the one they play at the competition). – All prize winners will receive a certificate. – All contestants will receive written feedback from the jury and have the chance to speak to the jury members personally.

APPLICATION AND FEES – The application fees are: Categories A1, A2, A3 (soloists) € 45,- (+ € 15,- for an ORDA accompanist) Categories B1, B2, B3 (duo, trio, quartet, quintet) € 35,- per person Categories C1, C2, C3 (sextet and bigger) € 25,- per person Category D ((pre) professional recorder consorts) € 45,- per person – If the same person wishes to apply in different categories, he/she must pay for the most expensive category, plus a supplement of € 15,- per extra application. Each contestant can only apply once for each of the setting categories A, B and D. Exceptionally, participants are allowed to participate with several ensembles in category C. – Accompanists of soloists taking part in category A do not need to pay an application fee. Contestants must apply by filling out and submitting the application form before 15th July, 2017. Early applications (by 15th June 2017) get 10% discount on the application fee. Applications are only valid once the fee has been paid, and the complete application form has been filled out and submitted (by mail or e-mail) to the ORDA 2017 administration. – There is a limit of 80 contestants. All valid applications will be processed in order of arrival of the payment. Applicants will receive a confirmation within 5 working days once the payment has been received. – There will be no restitution of the application fee if a contestant cancels his/her participation. – Contestants get major discounts for the concerts, workshops and other activities of ORDA 2015. At this point, they must deliver 4 copies of all the pieces they are going to perform. Each contestant will receive 1 festival booklet, a complete schedule of the competition and a badge that identifies them as competitors and gives them the right to enter all festival activities with discount. – All contestants must be able to show an original edition of all the music they will be performing.

JURY – The jury consists of six international professional recorder players: Bert Honig (president, Netherlands), Piers Adams (UK), Saskia Coolen (Netherlands), Bart Coen (Belgium), Pernille Petersen (Denmark) en Winfried Michel (Germany). – All decisions taken by the jury are final and irrevocable. There will be no correspondence about the jury decisions. – Contestants may approach jury members for comments and feedback once their participation in the competition is finished. There will be special moments when this is possible. – All contestants will receive a written report from the jury after participating in the competition.

RECORDINGS, INSURANCES, DISCLAIMER – Stichting The Royal Wind Music may register the competition in photos, video and audio, and use this material to promote the Open Recorder Days Amsterdam on the Internet, radio, television or press without asking for further authorisation from the contestants. – It is not allowed to make your own sound and video recordings during the competition. ORDA-2017 will make a video recording of each performance and send it to the contact person afterwards. The volunteer in charge of the video recordings cannot be held responsible for any problems or errors concerning quality or loss of the recording. – Stichting The Royal Wind Music will not take responsibility for any damage caused to people or instruments during the competition, or for stolen instruments or personal belongings. The Royal Wind Music will not arrange any insurance for instruments owned by the contestants. – By submitting an application for the ORDA-2017 competition, contestants opt-in to receive the e-mail newsletters of ORDA and The Royal Wind Music.
